Santa Barbara Wine Country
Touring the world-class vineyards of Santa Barbara Wine Country is always a tasty sojourn. Some 40 plus wineries dot the inland region with 12,000 plus acres of planted vines. Warm days, cool nights and dry summer weather create excellent growing regions here, along with the east/west mountain chain, which serves as a fan from the Pacific.
The Santa Ynez Valley produces world-class wines, including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Reisling, as well as a few Rhone and Italian varietals.
Tasting rooms and tours are available throughout the area, as well as first-class restaurants and gourmet delicatessens to pack up a picnic. Throughout the year, concerts, dinners and harvest parties make visiting a surreal experience. Mark your calendar for the annual Vintners’ Festival in April and Celebration of Harvest each October. The cultural calendar is full here with many choices.
Sprawling ranches and six small, quaint towns make up the Santa Ynez Valley — prized by locals (ranchers, cowboys, winemakers etc.) and visitors alike for its rural-agricultural heritage combined with its sophisticated “wine country” ambiance.
A scenic 40 minute drive north from Santa Barbara, along Lake Cachuma, the Santa Ynez Valley has many renowned thoroughbred horse ranches. Recently, through the movie Sideways, it has become that much more of a destination loved by visitors.
Amidst this relaxed atmosphere, the Santa Ynez Valley bosts a large array of opportunities for the active person. Golfing, biking, hiking and horseback riding along the open range are all easily enjoyed, as is fishing and boating at nearby Lake Cachuma.
The Santa Ynez Valley offers a wide range of properties choices — from the cozy cottages in the picturesque Danish community of Solvang to the wine tasting room-rich village of Los Olivos, to multi-million dollar ranch estates. The valley has its own small airport.
Santa Ynez Real Estate values average around $400,000 to $2.2 million. Santa Ynez view homes and estates/ranches start at around $1 million and can exceed this fivefold or even tenfold.
